Important Notice
All valuations, compliance calculations, scenario analyses, and market data provided by ShipScope are for informational purposes only and do not constitute financial, investment, legal, or professional advice. You should not rely solely on ShipScope outputs when making purchase, sale, financing, or regulatory decisions.
1. Vessel Valuations
ShipScope vessel valuations are automated estimates generated using a weighted three-approach methodology:
- Cost Approach: Replacement cost based on current newbuild prices, adjusted for age depreciation over a 25-year useful life and builder premiums.
- Market Approach: Analysis of comparable vessel sales from the ShipScope database, weighted by vessel similarity, size, age, and sale recency.
- Income Approach: Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis using market charter rates, operating cost benchmarks, and standard discount rates.
Key limitations of automated valuations:
- ShipScope does not physically inspect vessels or review class records
- Valuations assume the vessel is in good, seaworthy condition, fully classed with a clean record, and free of liens, encumbrances, or outstanding debts
- Valuations assume trading certificates and relevant approvals are valid and in place
- Estimated values represent an indicative fair market price in USD for a hypothetical transaction between a willing buyer and a willing seller on a prompt, charter-free delivery basis
- There is no guarantee that the estimated value will be realized in an actual transaction
- Market values can fluctuate significantly based on market conditions, freight rates, regulatory changes, vessel condition, and other factors not captured in automated analysis
Recommendation: For transactions, financing decisions, or any purpose where vessel value is material, we strongly recommend supplementing ShipScope valuations with:
- An independent broker valuation from a recognized sale and purchase broker
- A physical inspection and class survey
- Review of the vessel's complete maintenance and trading history
2. Compliance Calculations
CII, EEXI, EU ETS, and FuelEU Maritime calculations provided by ShipScope are estimates based on user-provided inputs and publicly available regulatory formulas. These calculations:
- Are not official regulatory submissions and should not be treated as such
- May not reflect the exact methodology or interpretation applied by flag state administrations, classification societies, or regulatory authorities
- Depend on the accuracy of the data you provide (fuel consumption, voyage distances, cargo quantities)
- May not account for all exemptions, corrections, or adjustment factors that apply to specific vessels or trading patterns
Always verify compliance status with your classification society or flag state administration before making regulatory filings.
3. TCO Analysis and Scenario Modeling
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculations, NPV/IRR projections, and scenario comparisons (scrubber retrofit, LNG conversion, slow steaming, etc.) are forward-looking estimates that involve assumptions about:
- Future fuel prices and carbon credit costs
- Future charter rates and freight market conditions
- Regulatory trajectories (CII thresholds, ETS scope expansion, carbon pricing)
- Equipment costs, installation timelines, and maintenance schedules
- Discount rates and residual values
Actual outcomes will differ from projections. Scenario analyses are intended to support strategic thinking, not to predict future results.
4. Data Sources
ShipScope uses data from the following sources. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of third-party data:
- Digitraffic AIS: Live vessel identification and position data from the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency. Coverage is concentrated in Baltic and Northern European waters.
- IMO Vessel Codes: Global vessel registry (name, IMO number, MMSI, flag, type). Open data published under the Public Domain Dedication and License (PDDL).
- Market Benchmarks: Newbuild prices, charter rates, scrap prices, and comparable sales data curated by ShipScope from public market sources. These are representative benchmarks, not real-time market feeds.
- Regulatory Formulas: CII, EEXI, EU ETS, and FuelEU calculations are based on published IMO and EU regulatory frameworks as of their latest amendments.
5. Lookup and Teaser Valuations
Estimated values displayed in the vessel lookup tool are rough indicative figures based on vessel type and general market benchmarks. They do not account for vessel-specific factors such as actual age, condition, equipment, trading history, or charter attachments. These figures are provided solely to demonstrate the platform's capabilities and should not be relied upon for any purpose.
6. No Professional Advice
Nothing provided by ShipScope constitutes financial, investment, legal, tax, or professional advice. ShipScope is a decision-support tool designed to complement, not replace, professional advisory services. You should consult qualified professionals before making material business decisions based on information from the platform.
